Immunisation Foundation Course

This two day course aim  is to ensure that all HCSWs engaging in any aspect of immunisation are trained in the delivery of vaccines in Primary Care.

Foundation Immunisation Course for Registered Healthcare Professionals 

in Primary Care

This 2 day course reflects the National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training for Registered Healthcare Professionals (Nurses and Nurse Associates).  

 

The course is designed to support the development of both theoretical and practical knowledge and skills required to immunise patients. 

The course will include: 

All elements regarding paediatric national immunisation programme 

• All elements regarding adult national immunisation programme 

• The aims of immunisation, national vaccine policy and schedules 

• The immune response to vaccines and how vaccines work • Vaccine-preventable diseases 

• The different types of vaccines, their composition and the indications and contraindications 

• Current issues in immunisation 

• Communicating with patients, parents and carers about vaccines 

• Legal issues in immunisation 

• Storage and handling of vaccines 

• Correct administration of vaccines 

• Anaphylaxis and adverse reactions 

• Documentation, record keeping and reporting

Annual Immunisation Update for HCSWs and AHCPs

Areas covered will therefore include: 

  • Current issues in immunisation relating to vaccines that HCA’s and Allied Health Professionals administer (including flu, COVID, Shingles, and Pneumococcal) and also other injectable medicine such as B12 injections. 
  • Recent epidemiology of the diseases HCAs and AHPs commonly vaccinate for scanges to recommendations or national policy 
  • Changes to storage, ordering and administration

  • Areas for improvement and adverse incidents as well as current ‘hot topics’ in the industry

This course covers all the requirements for an annual immunisation update as set out in the National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training for HCAs and AHPs in Primary Care. 

Annual Immunisation Update for Registered Healthcare Professionals

This training has been Developed in line with the “National Minimum Standards” for Immunisation Training for both Adult and Paediatric immunisations programmes and is focused on established clinical immunisers who require annual immunisation update .

 

The session will cover:   
Mechanics of Immunisation requirements and safe delivery updates  
• All elements regarding paediatric national immunisation programme  
• All elements regarding adult national immunisation programme  
• Influenza immunisation updates  
• COVID immunisation updates 

This course meets the requirements outlined in the key RCN and RCPSG competency documents in Travel 
Health.  It is expected that after the course, delegates will need a period of supervised practice to be fully ‘signed off’.  

Travel Health Consultations in Primary Care (foundation course)

This is an accredited interactive two-day course designed for registered healthcare professionals who are experienced in immunisation, and wish to develop their skills further by performing travel health consultations in practice.   Both parts must be completed to be eligible for certification.

Annual Travel Health Update

This annual update will cover:

  • Risk assessment: - the traveller; the destination; travel duration; travel itineraries; special needs and complex travellers
  • Vaccine preventable diseases, travel vaccines and schedules • Malaria – advice and medications 
  • Health promotion and preventive measures for non vaccine preventable travel related diseases and concerns such as travellers diarrhoea and accidents.
