An Introduction to Contraception

 

Throughout this course, you will acquire a range of valuable learning outcomes.  We will cover the legal and ethical considerations, as well as the guidelines and protocols that govern the provision of contraception services

 

Course content/learning outcomes

 

By the end of this session attendees will have a greater awareness of: 

 

  • To improve basic knowledge of all methods of contraception including Oral Contraception, Injectable contraception and Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)
  • To give clinicians the confidence to discuss of all methods with patients, including signposting for LARC
  • To enable clinicians to offer general contraceptive consultations after a period of supervised practice (it is expected that delegates are able to ‘repeat’ contraceptives, rather than initiate them).
  • To work within UKMEC Guidance to ensure contraceptive choices are appropriate and safe
  • Feel confident in giving follow-up Depo-Provera injections and giving appropriate advice Ensure that all medications are given or advised using ‘Patient Specific Directions’ and how we can manage this in General Practice
  • Understand the importance of a good referral pathway for all methods
