A clear, confidence‑building introduction to ECG interpretation for primary care
Looking to strengthen your understanding of ECGs without diving into complex cardiology? This foundational course offers a straightforward, clinical overview designed for busy primary care professionals who want to build confidence with the basics.
You’ll explore the core electrical conduction system of the heart. This includes the SA node, AV node, heart rate, BPM and rhythm—before moving on to the key components of an ECG such as:
- P waves
- QRS complexes
- T waves
- QTc intervals.
We’ll also look at how these features relate to common presentations in primary care. We will, including arrhythmia, bradycardia, tachycardia and atrial fibrillation, and how medications such as antidepressants can influence ECG findings.
Please note: This introductory session does not cover 12‑lead ECG interpretation, electrode placement, or advanced cardiology conditions.
Aim of the Course
To provide learners with a solid grounding in ECG fundamentals—covering basic cardiac electrical physiology, recognition of normal ECG components, and how these relate to common clinical conditions and medication effects—helping participants feel more confident when interpreting simple ECG findings.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this half‑day course, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the basic electrical conduction system of the heart
Understand the roles of the SA node, AV node and the cardiac conduction pathway, and how these structures generate and regulate heart rhythm.
2. Identify key ECG components and their clinical significance
Recognise and describe P waves, QRS complexes, T waves, heart rate/BPM, rhythm and QTc intervals, and understand what these elements indicate about cardiac function.
3. Relate basic ECG features to common conditions and medication effects
Link simple ECG patterns to conditions such as arrhythmia, bradycardia, tachycardia and atrial fibrillation, and understand how commonly used medications (e.g., antidepressants) can influence ECG findings.
