 Foundation Course – New To Travel Health (2-day accredited course)

This is an interactive two-day course designed for registered health care professionals who are new to travel health to equip them with the skills  needed to perform travel health consultations with the public.

This course meets those requirements outlined in the key RCN and RCPSG competency documents for starting out in Travel Health. It is expected that after the course, delegates will need a period of supervised practice to be fully ‘signed off’.  Workbooks will be emailed to the attendee a few days before the training.  Please ensure the workbook is printed and available throughout the training.

Individual Learning Outcomes:
• Be able to risk assess a trip and identify key individualised areas for discussion and medical interventions
• Be able to effectively use electronic up to date professional resources to aid in advising travellers about risks in the destination country
• Be able to explain travel related vaccine preventable diseases and to be able to demonstrate communicating with clients effectively using a structured and concise approach
• Be able to advise on malaria tablet options and the ABCD of malaria and to understand current challenges in the malaria consultation
• Be able to identify risks wider than vaccination and malaria and discuss with a traveller other health risk that can be minimised (e.g. sexual health, food and drink safety, altitude sickness).
• Be able to identify suitable and tailored information sheets that travellers will find useful for their trip
• Be able to run a consultation in a structured way utilising strategies for sticking to appointment times
• Be able to discuss common rules in immunology in order to apply appropriate principles to all vaccinations
• Be able to schedule large amounts of vaccinations
• Be able to complete most of the competencies outlined in The RCN competency document and then complete them fully once entered supervised practice
